Infertility Insurance is Available and Discover How it Works

Although it can be sometimes difficult to find, infertility insurance does exist and is available.  In fact, there are a couple of different types of infertility insurance for which a couple might qualify, under certain circumstances.

How Infertility Insurance Works
This type of insurance is typically sold as a supplement and usually does not cover the more expensive infertility treatments, such as  in vitro fertilization. However, you can get coverage for a range of treatment options like artificial insemination, assisted reproductive technology, laparoscopic surgery, and fertility testing.

Most policies cover the inexpensive treatments as opposed to the very costly.  The idea is that you have some coverage to take you to the point where your options become more aggressive and therefore more expensive.  From there, the couple can make a decision on whether to continue expensive processes, that they will have to pay for themselves, or seek some other resolution.  In any matter, you are covered at least until you get to that crossroad.

You can purchase a standard infertility insurance policy.  It works just like regular insurance in that you pay a monthly premium based upon the amount of coverage you desire.  Be certain to check the limitations and restrictions of any coverage before you opt into a policy.

Refund Option- If You Don't Get Pregnant
There is also the option of a refund policy.  This policy will cover you in the event that the infertility treatment does not work.  With this coverage, you pay out of pocket and up front for the infertility treatment.  If the infertility treatment fails, the insurance company refunds you anywhere from 70% to 100% of the money you paid for the procedure.  It is sort of like hedging a bet in Las Vegas.

Then there is financing insurance.  With this coverage, the couple takes out a loan for the cost of infertility treatment.  In the event that treatment does not result in pregnancy, the majority of the loan need not be paid back.

Infertility Insurance can be Difficult to Obtain
Of course, not everyone can get infertility insurance.  Many insurance companies do not provide it at all.  The companies who do provide infertility insurance ask that you meet certain requirements that can include, but are not limited to having an existing policy with their company, age restrictions, health restrictions, and a requirement that you must have been attempting to get pregnant for one to five years with negative results.

This insurance may offer options to an infertile couple that they didn’t think they had in regard to becoming pregnant.  Certainly it could be a help to get a struggling couple to a position where they might not get without the benefit of insurance.

Only 3% of Infertility Treatments are considered "High Cost"
It may be reassuring to note that most infertility treatments work without going into the most expensive options of in vitro fertilization and direct injection of sperm into an egg.  In fact, only three percent of all infertility treatments have to be carried into this upper cost, prohibitively expensive price range, where your infertility insurance might not continue to cover treatments.

So, if you are just beginning to deal with issues of infertility and finance, it may be good to know that there are possibly some insurance options available that can help.
