Couples who are facing infertility often feel they are alone in their struggle. They see other couples with babies and wonder why it is not them. They often forget that they are not alone, and that many other people in the world are suffering similar problems.

In the United States it is reported that approximately 7.3 million women, between the ages of 15 and 44, are experiencing some form of infertility. Signs of infertility can be difficult to detect, many of these women are not aware that they may have a problem until they try to start a family.

For example, some women have been successful in becoming pregnant with problems like polycystic ovarian syndrome and the diagnosis did not come until after they had children. However, this is not typically the case.

Listed below is a summary statistics provided by: Fertility, Family Planning, and Reproductive Health of U.S. Women: Data from the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth, tables 67, 69, 97

· 6.1% have received professional advice.

· 5.5% of women have received some sort of medical help to
  prevent a miscarriage.

· 4.8% have undergone a fertility test.

· 3.8% of women have received ovulation drugs.

· 1.1% of women have received artificial insemination.

· 11.8% of women between the ages of 15 and 44 years of
age have impaired fecundity which means they not only have
problems getting pregnant, they have problems carrying a
baby to term.

It is also a known fact that as a women gets older, her ability to produce eggs decreases, and her chances of getting pregnant get worse.

In fact, for childless women, the numbers for those that have received infertility treatments are as follows:

Age      Percentage

15 -29       2.9%
30-34      17.3%
35 -39     15.2%

The percent of childless married women, between the ages of 15 and 44, who become infertile, are as follows:

Age      Percentage

40 - 44      27.4%
30 - 34      16.9%
15 - 29      11%

Even though there are many couples that have issues getting pregnant, by no means does that mean that it is impossible. For example, it has been reported that for women age 31, which underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF), experienced a 38% success rate. However, by age 39, that rate drops to approximately 22%, and unfortunately, by age 43, the success rate drops to 10%.

Some women have resorted to using an egg donor with some significant success. Regardless of the fact that women over age 40 only have a success rate of 10% when receiving IVF treatments, women who used an egg donor (from significantly younger women) improved their success rate to 45%. It is important to note that this rate is better than that seen by women using their own eggs in their early thirties
