PCOS and infertility have long been troubled partners for couples who are trying to get pregnant. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS is one of the most common reasons for female infertility.

PCOS is a condition wherein the woman’s body produces excessive quantities of insulin. In turn, the female body responds to this introduction of insulin by synthesizing increased levels of androgens (male hormones). The significant production of these hormones will result in infertility.

During menstruation, follicles develop in a woman’s ovaries. Each follicle carries an egg. The follicles are reduced until only the one, which produces the egg during ovulation, remains. Woman with PCOS and infertility do not produce enough female hormones in their bodies to allow the follicles to mature and become an egg. These follicles can become cysts. Such cysts are detectible on ultra sound. Under these conditions, the ovaries usually develop small cysts on the outside.

The absence of a period or irregular menstruation can signal that a woman has PCOS and infertility. Other symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can be thinning hair or increased hair growth on the chest, back, or face. Women with PCOS can develop Type II Diabetes. Persistent acne or pelvic pain can, as well, can signal Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. The symptoms of PCOS are consistent in all woman and some may suffer irregular menstruation cycles are their only symptom of the disease.

PCOS a Common Condition That Sadly Goes Undetected!

Around 5% to 10% of all women of childbearing age suffer from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. However, only about 25% of the women who actually have PCOS are diagnosed as having it. Some women get lucky and are able to become pregnant even during an irregular menstrual cycle.

There are treatments for PCOS that can be as simple as weight loss. Losing weight often helps offset hormonal imbalances.

Metformin, which is a drug helpful in the formation of insulin, can be prescribed as another alternative. This drug is safe for women without diabetes because it affects insulin production without lowering blood sugar levels.

Clomid is another drug often used in treating women with PCOS and infertility. This drug tricks the brain into thinking that the body is low in estrogen. The body will then comply by beginning ovulation. While Clomid is often successful at inducing ovulation, only around 40% of these women who reach ovulation actually get pregnant.

In vitro fertilization is another option for women diagnosed with PCOS.

In vitro maturation is another process of in vitro fertilization where the eggs are allowed to mature in a laboratory setting before being used for fertilization. This type of in vitro fertilization has a better chance of success because of the eggs being allowed to mature before they are placed in the woman’s uterus.

The good news for women who are suffering from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is that infertility treatment is available and that success, although not guaranteed, can be just a procedure down the road a little way. It is getting through all of the procedures, anticipation, and disappointment that is most difficult for women suffering PCOS and infertility.
